Some answers to the most common questions we get asked

Q:
I installed an aia model but it doesn't show up in the aircraft selection menu.

A:
If you had read the "readme" file that comes with our models, you would have seen the following:

>>>>>>>>READ THIS!!!!<<<<<<<<<<<<

----S P E C I A L N O T E----

This is an AI aircraft and will NOT BE VISIBLE in the aircraft selection window in flight simulator.

Q:
I've seen people say that more detailed aircraft are harder on your framerates than less detailed aircraft. Aardvark planes seem much more detailed than a lot of other AI aircraft available, does this mean they're also harder on framerates?

A:

We've seen this particular piece of misinformation posted in several different forums ourselves. And while it certainly seems to make sense, in fact, it is incorrect.

Here's a longer explanation:

All things being equal, of course a more detailed looking model is going to have more polygons. It just makes sense that more detail requires more polygons to be used. Very simple.

It's also not true, because it's not that simple.

The key words above are "all things being equal" and therein lies the rub. All modelers are not equal. Whether you're talking about modeling skill, the amount of time the modeler wants to spend on a model, or whether they even care or not, modelers just aren't the same.

You can create a very sloppy AI model of a 747 that looks really bad next to the aia 747 and use twice as many polys as the aia model did. It'll look worse and have worse framerates.

But the conventional wisdom would have you believe that the poorer looking model has to have better framerates. That's because the conventional wisdom assumes that the poorer looking model must look the way it does because it skimped on polygons. Maybe the modeler just wasn't very good.

Basically, you can't take AI models at face value, don't be fooled into thinking that a great looking ai model has to have lower framerates than a mediocre looking ai model (of the same aircraft) just because it looks better.

Q:
I downloaded a "textures only" repaint for one of your aircraft, and the repainter said that the models were available from www.ai-aardvark.com. I've gone to the site, but I can't find any models!

A:
Yes, we've seen that in the description for many repaints, and we don't know why some repainters are saying that. There have never been any models available for download from the aardvark website.

All of our models can be downloaded from either flightsim.com, or avsim.com.

If you download a texture and the readme indicates that the model is available from the aardvark website, we encourage you to email the painter and let him know that his information is incorrect.

Q:
Where can I download your models from? I can't find any on your website.

A:

Avsim.com or flightsim.com.
There have never been any models available for download from the aardvark website.

Q:
How do I install a plane after I've downloaded it?

A:
If it's an AI Aardvark plane, you'll just place the folder containing the aircraft into your FS2002\aircraft folder.   See the README that came with the aircraft for details.

If it's a 3rd party repaint, follow the instructions provided by the repainter.  If there are no instructions, you can:
A:  Contact the author of the repaint, or:
B:  Read on and see if there's an answer here.

Q:
How do I assign my aircraft to a flightplan?

A:
To assign an aircraft to a flight plan you will need to download Traffic Tools by Lee Swordy.   Traffic Tools is available from avsim and the file name is: ttools133.zip     Read the documentation that comes with Traffic Tools, it is very complete and explains how to add aircraft as well as add or adjust flightplans.

David Carter has also written a beginners guide to AI traffic, you can read it here .

Q:
I downloaded a repaint of an AI Aardvark plane and it was just the textures.  Where do I get the model to use the textures with?

A:
Any of the initial release planes of any particular type will work, but just to make it simple, consult this handy table:

Notes
(PW) and (RR) refer to the engine types used on these aircraft. i.e., Pratt & Whitney or Rolls Royce.  If a  repainted aircraft looks fine, except for the engines, chances are you have the textures on the wrong model.

*
These early models do not have specular highlights (dynamic shine).  If, after installing these planes,  you'd like to update to the specular models, download  aia_spec.zip to get specular .mdls for all these aircraft.  The 757-200's were released with specular models.

Q:
I downloaded a 3rd party repaint,  and it was just textures.  I have the model that it goes with, what do I do now?

A:
You'll have to install the textures in the appropriate aircraft folder, then add a [fltsim.x] entry to the aircraft.cfg file.
